Molds are forms of fungi that are found naturally in the environment.  Indoors, mold needs moisture and a food source to grow.  When damp conditions are present, mold is able to grow on such diverse materials as wood, carpet, insulation, cloth, and all types of food.  Molds come in a variety of colors, including green, black, white, brown and orange.  There is often a musty odor around molds.  When there is a wet surface or material that is not dried or discarded promptly from water discharged from a bad storm causing flooding or even a burst pipe, mold can grow within 24 to 48 hours in those areas.  To remove mold you must first eliminate the source of moisture.  Next, remove damaged moldy materials. 

Molds produce spores, which are not visible to the naked eye and are small enough to travel through the air and into your lungs.  You can also be exposed to molds by skin contact.  The most common health problems from molds are allergy symptoms, but can also cause infections, irritations, and toxicities.

• Scratchy throat
• Eye irritation, such as itchy, red, watery eyes
• Sneezing
• Respiratory problems, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing.   Wheezing is a serious symptom that may mean asthma, and should be evaluated by a doctor.
• Chest tightness
• Cough
• Headaches and fatigue
• Skin irritation, such as a rash
• Fever, drowsiness, and nausea
• Upper and Lower Respiratory
• Fungal infection (systemic mycosis)
